Addiction Psychotherapy Group, Tuesdays 7:30 to 8:45 pm, 81 Irving Place, Suite 1B
Co-facilitators Drs. Paul Rinaldi, Ph.D. & January Massin, Ph.D.
This weekly group incorporates general group psychotherapy principles, with a specific focus on Addiction. The group is based on a Harm Reduction Model and Motivational Interviewing Approach. Members’ goals focus on reducing harm associated with use whether that be through total abstinence, moderation, or abstinence from the primarily problematic substance.
Most generally, group therapy provides one with a safe and unique support network.
Group therapy offers a unique and valuable therapeutic forum to examine, for example, the patient’s way of relating to others by exploring in-session interactions and how they might apply to those outside of the group. This might inspire consideration of alternative ways of relating in the outside world, allowing for more satisfying experiences and relationships.
In group therapy, each member naturally assumes a role. For example, one might assume the role of caretaker which when observed can provide an opportunity to explore how one can maintain this position while at the same time assuring that his or her own needs also get met.
In its most ideal practice, group leaders serve as facilitators, leaving room for fluid interaction and feedback between members while facilitating the process by encouraging members to elaborate upon their experience of one another, and by making observations concerning the nature of members’ roles and interactions.
